What is awra?
Definition and the awra of men
What awra means in Islam, what it covers for men and women, and how to respect it every day, in sport as well as during prayer.
In Islam, awra refers to the parts of the body that must remain covered in front of others. For men, the vast majority of scholars place it between the navel and the knees. Covering it is also a condition for the prayer to be valid.
What does “awra” mean?
The word comes from the Arabic ‘awra (عورة). It refers to what is kept out of other people’s sight. In religious terms, it applies to the parts of the body a Muslim must cover in public.
The concept is tied to modesty (al-haya’), a value Islam associates with faith and dignity.
The awra of men
For the vast majority of scholars, a man’s awra is the area between the navel and the knees. The schools of jurisprudence differ on one point: are the navel and the knee themselves included? Some include the knee, others do not. For this reason, many recommend covering the knee as a precaution.
In practice, a garment must cover this entire area. Fabric that is see-through or very tight, revealing the shape of the body, does not fulfil this role.

And for women?
For women, the awra is more extensive. According to the majority opinion, it covers the whole body in front of men outside the family, except the face and hands. This article focuses on men, but the logic is the same: cover without exposing.
The awra during prayer
Covering your awra is a condition for the prayer to be valid. This is where a problem many people know comes up: standing, a pair of shorts seems long enough, then rides up when sitting or in prostration (sujood) and uncovers the knee or the upper thigh.
So what matters is not how long the garment is when standing, but how it behaves in movement.
Everyday life: sport, pool, heat
The trickiest situations are the ones where you move: the gym, football, running, swimming. Regular shorts ride up, and thin fabric can become see-through. To stay covered, three criteria matter:
The garment should come down below the knee and stay there, even in movement.
Loose, so it doesn’t cling to the body.
Opaque, even when wet.
The approach behind AWRAH
AWRAH was born from this observation. Every garment is designed to come down below the knee and keep it covered, whether you are moving, sitting or praying.
Our swim shorts have a built-in liner that keeps you covered once in the water, and the ClimaDry range applies the same principle to sport.
Frequently asked questions
Is the knee part of a man’s awra?
The schools differ: some include it, others do not. As a precaution, many recommend covering it.
Are knee-length shorts enough?
Not always. Shorts that reach the knee when standing often uncover it once you sit down or go into prostration. A length that comes down below the knee is a safer choice.
Can you pray in shorts?
Yes, as long as the awra stays covered throughout the prayer, including when sitting and in prostration. What counts is the length in movement.
